Rodent control along El Rancho Blanco Road
El Rancho Blanco Road runs west off South Cage Boulevard in south Pharr and ends in a dead end past the 1500 block. It is not a typical subdivision. Much of the land sits in the old Kelly Pharr Tract, split into rural home sites from about 2 acres up to 10 acres, with custom homes, casitas, pools and some properties set up for horses. PSJA Southwest Early College High School is close by, and vacant tracts still separate many of the homes.
Why acreage properties attract rodents
Feed and hay are a food supply
Horse feed, grain bins and stacked hay give rats and mice all the food they need in one place. A torn feed bag or an open bin can support a colony for months, and Pharr winters rarely freeze, so they breed all year.
More buildings mean more entry points
A home on acreage often has a barn, a stable, a tack room, a casita, a workshop and a pool equipment room. Each one has doors, vents and wire holes. A rat only needs a 1/2 in gap and a mouse needs about the width of a dime.
Open land right next door
Vacant tracts with tall brush give rodents cover right up to your fence line. When fields get mowed or soaked by heavy rain, they move to the nearest dry building.
ZIP code we cover in the El Rancho area
Every address on El Rancho Blanco Road that we have seen is in Pharr ZIP 78577. We cover the whole road, the nearby tracts along South Cage Boulevard, and Jackson South Estates just to the west.
Our barn and outbuilding checklist
On a horse or acreage property we check more than the house. This is the order we usually work in.
- Feed room and grain storage
We look for gnaw marks on bins, droppings on shelves and spilled grain. Moving feed into metal cans with tight lids is the single biggest fix.
- Hay storage and stalls
Norway rats burrow under stacked hay and along stall walls. We set snap traps on their runs where horses and pets cannot reach them.
- Tack room and workshop
Mice nest in saddle pads, blankets and boxes. We seal gaps at doors and wall openings with steel mesh and sealant.
- Pool equipment and utility rooms
Warm, quiet rooms with wiring are a favorite nesting spot. Chewed wiring near hay or pool pumps is a fire risk, so we check wires and close pipe openings.
- The main house last
Rooflines, garage doors, weep holes and AC line openings get sealed so the rodents we push out of the barn do not move into your home.
We never use loose poison indoors, and around horses, dogs and barn cats we rely on traps and sealing first. Locked bait stations go outside only when it makes sense and only where animals cannot get to them.
Cleaning up droppings in a barn
Rodent droppings and urine in hay dust can carry hantavirus and leptospirosis. Never sweep or use a leaf blower on them. Wear gloves, spray the area with 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, wait 5 minutes, then wipe it up with paper towels.
